East Village

East Village might just be the trendiest area in Calgary, so it's no surprise its history runs deep! The area was first developed by foreigners when fur traders first started to do so in the 1840's. Fort Calgary was established in 1875, and shortly became a exciting and lively community. However, East Village did not remain like this forever; public interest in the area dwindled, businesses closed up, and in 1941 it was labeled a "skid row" by the city medical officer. East Village was neglected for many years until the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation was formed and they poured money into the community to revitalize it. Today, East Village is home to 4,000 people, with plans to home an additional 7,500 more! Some of the best things to check out are the new award-winning Central Public Library, Studio Bell (which is home to Canada's National Music Centre), and Fortuna's Row (one of Calgary's top restaurants, it's Latin American cuisine and so, so good).

Inglewood

Inglewood has the honour of being Calgary's oldest community; it was founded in 1875 alongside Fort Calgary, and much of its architecture is still that from over a hundred years ago (over 400 buildings of residential, institutional and commercial buildings are from 1914 or earlier). At the centre of Inglewood is 9th Avenue, Calgary's first "main street". The neighbourhood is almost exclusively one-to-two story buildings, making the area feel very accessible and approachable. It was voted Canada's Greatest Community back in 2014, and it truly is a wonderful area, with businesses, shops and restaurants to cater to every person's taste and style. Be sure to check out The Ironwood and The Blues Can for live music and drinks, Hello Vintage and the Peacock Boutique for boutique clothing, and for food, try the Deane House, Rouge or The Nash for a fancy dinner, or if you want something less formal, get a burger and a shake from The Inglewood Drive-In, Spolumbo's for a classic Italian sandwich, or Inglewood Pizza for a quick slice!
