Bridgeland is a very popular Calgary neighbourhood. Formerly an industrial area, Bridgeland's most important building for many years was the Calgary General Hospital, operating from 1910 to 1997, and was demolished in 1998. Many businesses sprung up around Bridgeland during this time; a "Little Italy'' popped up in lower Bridgeland, and though it isn't as large as it once was, it's still a popular part of the community to visit. Bridgeland is also home to Canada's second largest zoo, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has been in operation since 1929, and it is home to over 4,000 animals of more than 100 different species! Some of the best things to check out in Bridgeland are Shiki Menya (one of the best and most popular ramen restaurants in town), Luke's Drug Mart (part pharmacy, part coffee shop, part ice cream parlour, and more!), and Bridgeland Market for a grocery store with a small-town vibe. Riverside School is a great place to send your little ones too! Several communities border Bridgeland and are easily accessible by foot, bike, or car, such as Renfrew, Crescent Heights and Mayland Heights.
